Library Must be Present to Educate Community

Medan Merdeka Selatan, Jakarta - Delegations from DPRD Commission I and DPRD Secretariat of Tabalong Regency paid a work visit to National Library of Indonesia Service Building located at Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Jakarta on Friday (11/12). The work visit was headed by Deputy Chairman of Tabalong Regency DPRD, Jurni, and received directly by Director of National Library of Indonesia, Muhammad Syarif Bando at Meeting Room, 5th floor. The purpose of work visit is to get a deeper insight into how to develop public library of Tabalong.

"The existence of regional libraries in many areas until now still seems to be in between existed and not existed, especially for areas with limited APBD. For that, we hope to get further knowledge in order to develop regional library of Tabalong Regency, so that it can play a greater role in shaping the quality of its people," said Jurni.

Director of National Library of Indonesia, Muhammad Syarif Bando, highly appreciated the stated goals. In his opinion, libraries in the 21st century are no longer about collecting collections but rather knowledge transfer. Library is the stage to improve the quality of a country's people because reading is the foundation for building a nation's civilisation.

"It is impossible for a variety of sophisticated products to be presented on the face of the earth without being preceded by readers and observers, so ‘iqra’ becomes the foundation. Libraries must be present to assist people to be smart with the millions of knowledges contained in them," said Syarif Bando.

On the same occasion, at the end of the event, Director of National Library of Indonesia symbolically handed over a mobile library car to Head of South Kalimantan Provincial Library and Archives Service, Nurliani, who was also present at the visit.
