Jakarta - Currently, library development is included in one of five Indonesian Government National Priorities, namely priority point one related to Human Development and Poverty Alleviation. Government's attention in involving libraries is accumulation of performance, hard work, and wholehearted dedication of Indonesian librarians in maintaining and developing library institutions, that government is increasingly aware of the role and positive value of libraries for society and communities.
Collaboration between libraries and social inclusion movements within the framework of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is one of global issues that are relevant to library and librarianship world today. Apart from these issues, of course there are many other issues or topics that are no less important to understand in order to build a network of international partners, one of which is to recognise what the international paradigm looks like on the profession and library institution.
Director of National Library Muhammad Syarif Bando was keynote speaker on a webinar themed "Learn from the Global World, Act for the Nation" held via Zoom Meeting application, on Friday (23/10/2020). In his remarks, Syarif Bando stated that it is important to discuss, study, and sound the movement of Indonesian libraries and librarians on a global scale because international attention and recognition of their performance can create a new advocacy way to attract partners in the international world.
This webinar is a place to learn about librarians and librarians on the global stage to perform good deeds on the national stage. "The target of what we are going to study today is aimed at building Indonesian nation through librarianship and libraries because recognition will make our movement space in creating and serving the nation more freely," he explained.
Southeast Asian Studies Librarian at University of Hawaii at Mãnoa Rohayati Paseng said that university libraries must be able to provide services that make students comfortable and in developing collections they must know what students need. The point is that library carries a mission to educate and provide information to the nation so that future generations can prepare to compete in the outside world.
On the same occasion, founder of Magbasa Tayo Movement, Kevin Conrad T Tansiongco, explained the purpose of establishing Magbasa Tayo Movement, among others, to provide awareness about the importance of libraries and Community Reading Parks (TBM) as well as providing reading materials and basic technical assistance for people who wish to open libraries. Because for him library is a source of information and reading is a fun activity to do.
Webinar with the theme "Learn from the Global world, Act for the Nation" is also part of National Best Achievement Librarian Selection 2020 competition which would be held from 18 to 24 October 2020. This activity is attended by Best Achievement Librarian at Regional/Province Level from all over Indonesia. The contestants are assessed by seven juries consisting of academics, practitioners, and experts in the field of librarianship.
