Literacy Plays Important Role in Community’s Economy

Salemba, Jakarta – Whether large or small, the productivity of a nation can be seen from how superior its human resources (HR) are. It should be noted that competitive human resources also greatly affect the progress of a nation. Literacy plays an important role in driving people's economy because it focuses more on benefit-oriented efforts, namely combining the potential of natural resources with the capabilities of existing human resources so as to produce creations or products of economic value.

Today, Indonesia's economic condition is generally harsh, especially in the midst of Covid-19 pandemic which has resulted in a decline in people's purchasing power. The impact of this situation is that national economy is experiencing a weakening. Trade in goods and services is psychologically depressed and the trade balance, both exports and imports, is experiencing sluggishness.

"Literacy is not just having the ability to read and write, but the ability to understand, digest, and analyse text and concept to be translated into daily actions," explained Director of National Library (Perpusnas) RI, Muhammad Syarif Bando, on the occasion of “Literacy in Building Community’s Economy” Webinar, Tuesday (20/10). In his opinion, good literacy will help people to remain productive in generating various innovations even though currently in a pandemic condition.

In the period 2020-2035, Indonesia will experience demographic bonus. This is a rare phenomenon in which the number of productive populations is more than the number of nonproductive populations. In order to support good demographic bonus, library paradigm must be changed. Library paradigm must be in line with the development of civilisation and the flow of information and communication technology. Libraries must transform.

Social inclusion-based library transformation is a library service approach that is committed to improving the quality of life and welfare of the community as library users. “Literacy in Building Community's Economy” Webinar held via Zoom meeting is the result of collaboration between National Library of Indonesia and Library and Archives Office of North Sumatra. This seminar presented speakers from DPR RI Commission X Sofyan Tan, Head of North Sumatra Library and Archives Service Halen Purba, and recipient of Social Inclusion-based Library Transformation Programme assistance, Samidi.
