Literacy Culture Produces Superior Human Resources
Medan Merdeka Selatan, Jakarta - The Covid-19 pandemic has succeeded in changing perspectives and even confirming that the concept of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 has become an important part of everyday life. Nowadays, digital space is an effective way to get information and knowledge. Therefore, library must be able to transform so that they can play a significant role in increasing the capacity of the community.
It is common knowledge that Indonesia will reach the peak of the demographic bonus in 2028-2030. At that time the millennial generation become the largest population and had a dominant role in the era of the demographic bonus. This generation will determine the direction and wheels of state development. Millennial generation who are superior and have the quality to compete with the outside world are assets of the nation that are able to bring Indonesia towards a more advanced and dynamic development direction.
This was conveyed directly by the Director of the National Library of Indonesia, Muhammad Syarif Bando when he was the Keynote Speaker at the webinar on the Socialization of the Reading Fondness Culture. The webinar with the theme "Increasing Regional Potential and Community Welfare through Literacy Culture" is the result of collaboration between National Library and Library and Archives Service Office of Southeast Sulawesi Province, conducted online using the Zoom Meeting, Wednesday (11/18) in Jakarta.
"Indonesia has the opportunity to enter the five countries in the world with the largest economy. To realize this dream, the main key is the people," he said.
To support a good demographic bonus, Syarif Bando advised that the library paradigm changed. From what was initially considered a book warehouse, now it has to be transformed into a library that can improve people's abilities with an information technology approach. Thus, it is hoped that the quality of life of the community will be more prosperous.
"To produce superior human resources, literacy culture must be further enhanced by of course providing a deeper understanding of the four levels of literacy, from easy access to read to the creation of goods and services," he explained.
In this case, the social inclusion-based library transformation is a library service approach that is committed to improve the quality of life and welfare of the library users. This is done in addition by providing a source of reading materials to gather information and knowledge; library is also obliged to facilitate the community with various training and skills activities aimed at community socio-economic empowerment.
