Library Information Organization Make Information Accessibility Easy for Users

Jakarta - Library innovation and librarian competence are needed in today's digital era. Library services must be user oriented (user-based) so that the collection of library materials is easily accessible for users to rediscover. In addition, librarian creativity is needed because this profession is not just a bookkeeper, but a knowledge worker.

This was conveyed by the Senior Librarian of the National Library of Indonesia, Hartono, in a webinar which was held in the framework of 25 years of Library Visit Day and Month of Reading Fondness. In the session on the Fundamentals of Library Information Organization, Hartono stated that library information organization have four elements, namely, theory and practice regarding the concept of information organization that is able to boost information literacy and ultimately increase the literacy index.

Then, it is about the transformation of digital library in Indonesia. Third is the strategy that must be carried out by librarians in building an information organization. And fourth, the competence of librarians in the digital era to build an effective information organization so that they can develop the reading fondness of society.

According to Hartono, library information organization is an important prerequisite for information accessibility in the world of library. This is a library technical activity that is carried out professionally and systematically to prepare bibliographical listings in an effort to improve an effective information retrieval system. The form is a bibliographic listing with metadata in an online catalog or Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).

"Now, the information retrieval system can be done using the name of the author, the subject title or the class number. So that it can be found quickly. So the success of information organization is directly proportional to the accessibility of information so that people can find information easily, quickly and cheaply. I never imagined for the very large collection, we didn't have a means of searching and a means of retrieval in the form of an online catalog. Of course we will be looking for information for days,” he explained when delivering the virtual webinar material which was held in Jakarta on Thursday, September 17, 2020.

Hartono emphasized that information organization is not just cataloging or how to determine subjects, but it is a form of effort in building an organization, both in printed collections and electronic formats. This doctoral degree achiever emphasized that building an access information organization must be done professionally. This means that librarians are required to master cataloging guidelines, index language, and indexing so that there are no errors in building the database. Librarian competence is needed in descriptive cataloging and subject indexing.

"The librarian's innovation and creativity are needed here, so if we look at the catalog in the form of a bibliographic description, generally it is saturating because all we see are words. So if that's the case, the OPAC format display should include a book cover, bibliographic description, plus a synopsis or abstract. By this way, it will be more interesting," he concluded.
