25 Years Library Visit Day: Roles & Functions of Libraries Must Keep Going in the Conditions of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Salemba, Jakarta - The Covid-19 pandemic must not dampen the services provided by libraries to the public. Although the library cannot be physically visited by the public, online services can be a mainstay so that people can still get the information they need.

This was conveyed by Deputy of Library Material Development and Information Services of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia, Ofy Sofiana, when giving a speech at the webinar "25 years of Library Visit Day and Month of Reading Fondness Towards Superior Human Resources and Advanced Indonesia" which was held virtually on Monday (9/14/2020). Library Visit Day was declared on September 14, 1995, while the Month of Reading Fondness was declared in September 1995.

This year, the commemoration of Library Visit Day and Month of Reading Fondness was carried out in difficult time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Even so, the roles and functions of libraries must keep going during the pandemic. Moreover, the government encourages people to limit their learning activities and work at home to reduce the risk of the spread of covid-19.

"For this reason, it is necessary to make various innovations that can be carried out to realize the roles and functions of libraries during the ongoing pandemic. The innovation that can be done by libraries is to provide various information services online so that people can access them anytime and anywhere,” he explained.

Ofy invites the public to take advantage of the National Library's online services such as iPusnas the digital book collection application, Indonesia OneSearch the library repository, the Khasanah Pustaka Nusantara (Khastara) page, registration of National Library membership online, submitting the ISBN book serial number, and through social media. "I hope that these services can become a solution in the pandemic era so that libraries do not lose their roles and functions in the dissemination and fulfilment of public information needs," she concluded.

Commemorating Library Visit Day, this year, National Library of Indonesia is holding a webinar from September 14 to September 21, 2020 which presents various themes with speakers from National Library of Indonesia librarians and stakeholders. Complete information can be obtained through National Library of Indonesia social media.
