25 Years of Library Visit Day: Library should be the Center of Knowledge Transfer

Salemba, Jakarta - Commemorating 25 years of Library Visit Day and Month of Reading Fondness, the National Library of Indonesia invites librarians, literacy activists, and stakeholders in the library sector to serve the community to increase the literacy index of Indonesian society. The synergy of all elements of society is needed for the realization of a nation that is smart, advanced, prosperous, with a reading culture character and foster creativity, innovation and economic independence for an advanced Indonesia.

Deputy of Library Resources Development of National Library, Deni Kurniadi, stated that library has a role in creating a knowledgeable society. And this can be realized through a reading culture that supports the development of individual cognitive skills.

For this reason, the National Library of Indonesia is currently trying to change the paradigm of library as a collection management center into a knowledge transfer center. In the new paradigm, said Deni, library play an important role in improving the quality of people's lives. The National Library of Indonesia is moving to be the pioneer of the literacy movement to improve people's welfare and encourage libraries in Indonesia to empower people through an information technology approach.

"And the most important thing is how people are convinced that there will be an increase in welfare after getting out of difficulties by having certain knowledge in accordance with existing potentials. Library must be transformed so that it could has a significant role in improving the community's abilities, in that case they can change the quality of their life to a better direction towards prosperity," said Deni while giving a speech at the webinar "25 years of Library Visit Day and Month of Reading Fondness Towards Superior Human Resources and Advanced Indonesia" which was held virtually on Monday (9/14/2020).

Therefore, the role of library as a vehicle for shared learning must be increased to develop the potential of the community. Apart from providing reading sources to gather information and knowledge, library must also facilitate the community with various training and skill activities to empower the community's socio-economy.
