Tanjung Jabung Barat DPRD Consults on Library Management

Medan Merdeka Selatan, Jakarta - Low reading interest combined with lack of synergy from government and assumption that libraries are still less important, these that prompted Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency DPRD to consult with National Library regarding library management, Friday (7/8).

"We admit that people's reading interest in Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency is still low, even though as we know that reading can add new knowledge so that later it will improve the quality of human resources," said Chairman of DPRD Special Committee III of West Tanjung Jabung Regency, Satria Tubagus Ryan Hermawan.

Satria explained, with 734 thousand people, Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency is known for its plantation commodities. Unfortunately, most of these plantation products are directly exported, even though if they are processed first, certainly they have a high selling value, and this will have an impact on the economy of the surrounding community.

"This is where the role of library is needed, the books at library will certainly increase people's knowledge. Hopefully, people will not only become 'spectators' in their own region,” he explained. Satria hopes that by visiting National Library, he can get support in developing library management in his region.

Responding to this, Director of National Library, Muhammad Syarif Bando said, library is the heart of education, and is included in the state's objectives in educating the life of the nation. In his opinion, it is not about minimum reading culture, but the insufficient availability of books.

"Libraries are supported by 10 laws, I hope that in Tanjung Jabung Barat, DPRD can arrange regulations that are not normative, but real, to be implemented. Make sure there is a regulation that everyone must read, because reading can increase literacy so that it has an impact on improving the quality of human resources," he said.
