Minister Tito: Local Leaders Must Provide Reading Material for Their Communities

Pancoran, Jakarta - Indonesia is a large country with the 4th largest population in the world. However, the demographic and geographic potential does not make Indonesia a rich country. The lack of support and attention from local government is considered one of obstacles why library development and reading interest has not improved.

"Many regions do not yet understand the issue of reading interest," explained Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian when opening National Library National Coordinating Meeting 2020 in Jakarta on Tuesday (25/2).

Minister of Home Affairs Tito regretted that. As a matter of fact, National Coordination Meeting is important. It defines the direction and success of the nation. Not just lips service activity. However, no more than five per cent of 34 provinces and 514 districts/municipalities invited were present.

Many international studies have said that Indonesia’s reading interest is poor. That is the alarm. A kind of wake-up call. Although the latest, World Culture Index showes its latest update that Indonesia's reading interest rate is in the middle position.

On various occasions, National Library reported that it is not about reading material adequacy but the availability of access to reading material. Moreover, the majority of the population lives in remote, isolated areas.

"Local leaders must start to realise and try to provide reading materials that are suitable to the needs of the community," said Tito.

Knowledge is very important. It is the key to bringing out superior resources. In addition to health factors, superior human resources must also be educated and trained.

The more reading material available, the more open the innovations that can be generated, to develop ideas, and also options so that they can make quick decisions.
