"Singapura Dimakan Api" Manuscript Collection Exhibited at NLB Singapore Exhibition
Victoria Street, Singapore - National Library Board of Singapore will hold the exhibition "On Paper: Singapore Before 1867" on September 28, 2019 to March 22, 2020 on the 10th floor of Gallery NLB Building, Victoria Street. The exhibition will present 150 ancient manuscripts relating to the early history of Singapore. One of the manuscripts that will be displayed is a collection owned by Indonesia titled "Singapura Dimakan Api".
The exhibition titled "On Paper: Singapore Before 1867" will exhibit a 17th century Portuguese navigation map showing the presence of Shahbandar in Singapore Island to a document showing the construction of British colony's settlement on 1 April 1867. In addition, National Library of Indonesia also lent "Singapura Dimakan Api poetry w 270" collection to be exhibited at the "On Paper: Singapore Before 1867" exhibition at Rare Collection Gallery. The gallery features treasure of Rare Material Collection of Singapore National Library Board consisting of valuable research materials related to Singapore and southeast Asia in the form of more than 15,000 books, journals, manuscripts, maps, photographs and ephemera. Many of the items in the collection were inherited from the predecessor of Singapore Library (1844 – 1874) and Raffles Museum and Library (1874 – 1960). This collection is also increasingly developed with the latest donations from institutions and individuals.
Director of National Library of the Republic of Indonesia Muhammad Syarif Bando and Director of Singapore National Library Board Tan Huism signed an exhibition loan agreement (loan agreement) on Saturday (21/09) at NLB Singapore. The agreement includes agreement on loan period, collection condition, collection care, intellectual property rights, insurance, and collection transportation lent by National Library to NLB Singapore.
In addition, National Library visit was also in the framework of coordination related to Indonesian preparation as the host of Conference Director of National Library in Asia and Oceania (CDNLAO) in 2020. CDNLAO annually discusses the issue of libraries that are common interest and promotes resources and information sharing in Asia Pacific region, information exchange and promotes cooperation for the development of libraries in Asia and Oceania, assists libraries in less developed countries through cooperation and understanding of the latest state of library development of libraries in Asia and Oceania.
