Leiden University Explores Cooperation with National Library

Medan Merdeka Selatan, Jakarta  Director of National Library, Muhammad Syarif Bando received an official visit from Director of Leiden University Library, Kurt de Belder, at National Library Services Facility Building, on Tuesday (25/6). The visit was to continue the cooperation between National Library and university library in the Netherlands, the signing of which (letter of interest) had been conducted in April 2018. The cooperation that will be explored includes manuscript digitisation and staff exchange to explore digitisation techniques.

Many studies conducted by researchers or students in the world rely on digital information sources available in library. Understanding this, Kurt de Belder invited National Library to cooperate in terms of manuscript digitisation, especially after it was discovered that half of the digital collection users came from Indonesia.

“Indonesia has quite many manuscripts and have not been digitised. The collection holds knowledge potential that can be explored for research,” said Kurt during an audience with Director of National Library and related officials.

Kurt explained that this cooperation would be large scale and had the chance to invite other libraries in the world to build digital library, the contents of which are digitised ancient manuscript, not only from Indonesia but also other countries. “Those digitised collections will be very useful for development of science globally because it will be open access collection,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Director of National Library Muhammad Syarif Bando said, currently, National Library has Khastara website (Khasanah Pustaka Nusantara, red.) containing ancient manuscripts having been digitised.

“Ancient manuscripts that have been digitised can be accessed by anyone on Khastara website. We welcome the cooperation of National Library with Leiden University. This cooperation, hopefully, can add digitised ancient manuscript collections at National Library,” he said.

Present at the meeting, Deputy of Library Material and Information Services Development Ofy Sofyana and Prime Secretary Sri Sumekar. Meanwhile, Head of University Library Kurt de Belder was accompanied by former Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman Djojonegoro and Head of Library and Archives Office Service Aceh Wildan.

The visit was interspersed with a tour of service facilities on several floors of National Library Services Facility Building, including to the second floor to make member card. Kurt expressed his admiration and praise for National Library building, facilities, and users that crowded the building.
