National Library Work Meeting 2019: Director of National Library Encourages Library Big Data Development in Indonesia

Medan Merdeka Selatan, Jakarta – National Library of Indonesia held Work Meeting 2019 with theme “Librarian Performing to Achieve Social Inclusion Based-Library to Improve Community Welfare”. This theme is in accordance with the tagline set by National Library at the beginning of 2019 encouraging information utilisation contained in library as main priority.

In 2019, library is included in National Priority Programme in the field of literacy and economic social development through social inclusion based-library programme. Director of National Library Muhammad Syarif Bando explained through the policy, library should implement its function to achieve prosperous community. This can be realised through librarian who utilised content in library because library is a trustworthy information source. “National Library does not only focus on reading avidity but also community welfare because the final goal of this nation is to prosper community,” explained he.

Through work meeting, National Library as a library patron institution is encouraged to be the driving force as well as the institution summarising and renewing data and information on library throughout Indonesia. National Library is not only responsible to report internal library performance, but all over Indonesia. This can only be performed through establishment of big data storing the latest performance report of provincial and regency/city libraries. Through the big data, heads of libraries in provincies and regencies/cities are given access to application providing information related to the latest performance from each institution in particular period.

“Our duty is to foster and explore all data on library in this republic, to process, analyse, create report document, then report it to the President, House of Representatives, National Development Planning Ministry (Bappenas), Finance Ministry, and Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, so that the performance can be measured,” explained Syarif Bando when delivering direction at National Library Work Meeting 2019 held in Multifunction Room, National Library of Indonesia Service Facility building, Jakarta on Tuesday (12/2/2019).

In his direction, Syarif Bando explained there were four priorities of National Library activities in 2019. The first is grand design arrangement of National Library State Civil Apparatus (ASN); secondly arrangement of National Library grand design and infrastructure database; the third is National Library branding; the fourth is National Library reorganisation and empowerment of Norms, Standard, Procedure and Criteria (NSPK) as well as National Library 2020-2029 long term plan arrangement. In addition, work meeting participants were asked to use the budget with managerial proficiency. “Use your mangerial proficiency to manage budget flow, don’t use technical proficiency to spend budget,” he said.

National Library of Indonesia Work Meeting 2019 is held for three days on 12-14 February 2019. National Library of Indonesia Work Meeting presented speakers such as third member of Audit Board (BPK) Achsanul Qosasi, Bappenas Deputy of Human, Society, and Culture Development Subandi, Chairman of Indonesian Science Academy (AIPI) Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro, and representative from Finance Ministry. On the second day, National Library of Indonesia Work Meeting will be filled with Strategic Plan 2015-2019 Performance Target Achievement Evaluation, Strategic Plan 2020-2024 Performance Target, Work Plan 2020 presented by Prime Secretary Sri Sumekar, Deputy of Library Material and Information Service Development Ofy Sofiana, Deputy of Library Resources Development Woro Titi Haryanti and continued with Commission Meeting up to the third day. Work meeting was attended by 200 participants consisting of structural and functional officials in National Library.
