Information Dissemination Should Often Carried Out by Librarians

Medan Merdeka Selatan, Jakarta — In the midst of pandemic, everything is forced to enter industry 4.0, including librarians. The level of competence possessed by librarians is important so that they always have skills, creative ideas, and innovations in library services. Adapting to new things is a necessity so that libraries and librarians are still trusted as important sources of information for the community.

"The pandemic requires almost all activities to be carried out from home. However, libraries offer a variety of digital applications that can be used by anyone, including academics," explained Director of National Library Muhammad Syarif Bando at Webinar on Librarian Innovation and Creation in Improving Competence in Facing the New Normal held by Hasanuddin University, Makassar, on Tuesday afternoon, (4/8).

In the past, libraries were known as rows of dusty books and librarians were in charge of managing books. The paradigm then changed so that in the current era, libraries and librarians are assisted by advances in information and communication technology (ICT) to transform knowledge. This means that the content of information and knowledge will be of great benefit if distributed to community.

Libraries and librarians must be willing to adapt to the changes that have occurred due to the pandemic in order to survive. Changes in service by making innovations so that users can access information at library. Information dissemination should be carried out frequently by librarians. Do not wrestle anymore with books but how the content of the books that are read is then made into social media using digital devices. The world needs librarians who have broad insight, are responsive and able to provide information quickly.

"The librarian profession is a special profession because it has access to accurate sources of knowledge. Make this a competency advantage. This is important to anticipate hoaxes that are rife during the pandemic," concluded Syarif Bando.
